Tesla<\/a><\/strong> has completed a critical milestone in its worldwide energy business. The company just sent the first batch of Megapack energy storage equipment to Australia from its newly established Shanghai Megafactory. This is the first time Tesla has exported energy storage equipment from its manufacturing site in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Megapack is an advanced battery system intended for large-scale energy projects. Each unit can hold more than 3,900 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to run a Tesla Model 3 for 39,000 kilometers or supply energy to dozens of households. The system is crucial for stabilizing power grids, integrating renewable energy, and preventing outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesla Shanghai Megafactory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory commenced production on February 11, 2025, just over a year after construction began in May 2024. The plant, located in the Lin-gang Special Area, is 200,000 square meters in size and has an annual manufacturing capacity of 10,000 Megapacks. The plant’s total investment is 1.45 billion yuan ($200 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The factory is Tesla’s second Megapack production facility, following its original facility in Lathrop, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Australia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Australia is a key market for Tesla\u2019s energy storage products. The government has been rapidly expanding its renewable energy sector, using large-scale battery storage to regulate swings in solar and wind power supply. Tesla previously installed its Powerpack and Megapack<\/a><\/strong> devices in Australia to help maintain grid stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Plans for the Tesla Shanghai Megafactory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following the initial shipment to Australia, Tesla intends to offer Megapack systems to China and other Asia-Pacific markets. The Shanghai Megafactory is an important part of Tesla’s overall energy plan, which includes growing battery storage options globally. Elon Musk, Tesla\u2019s CEO<\/a><\/strong>, hinted at further expansion in the energy storage business.
