This time, it’s private Fram2 mission acquired the first human X-ray in Earth orbit, marking a significant symbolic and scientific milestone. The mission, which launched on March 31, 2025, sent four crew members into polar orbit to conduct several pioneering experiments. Among them was a reenactment of Wilhelm Röntgen’s landmark 1895 X-ray, which was conducted in space for the first time. With this achievement, SpaceX continues to redefine what’s possible in orbital science and human health research.

Honoring the Past, Innovating the Future

The history of X-rays began in 1895 with German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen. While researching the effects of electric currents in gases at extremely low pressure, he discovered something unexpected. In a darkened chamber with a sealed discharge tube wrapped in black cardboard, he observed a light on a nearby fluorescent screen.

He then placed his wife’s hand over the plate. When he developed the image, it revealed her bones and the shadow of her ring, a groundbreaking moment in science. This was the world’s first X-ray image, or as he called it at the time, a “röntgenogram.”

The radiance emanated from invisible rays that could penetrate through solid objects. Röntgen was curious and placed several items between the tube and a photographic plate. To his surprise, some materials allowed more light to travel through than others. Röntgen called the mysterious photons “X-rays” since their real nature was unknown. Later studies revealed that X-rays, like visible light, are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, albeit with significantly higher intensity. His breakthrough quickly transformed medical diagnostics, laying the groundwork for modern radiology.

This performance was more than simply ceremonial; it established the feasibility of performing real-time diagnostic imaging in microgravity. A significant step toward enhancing astronaut health on future deep-space missions.

Mission Objectives: Health and Science in Space

Fram2 was more than just a voyage into orbit. The expedition had specific scientific goals. Over several days, the crew conducted 22 research experiments. These were intended to aid long-term space missions and advance our understanding of human biology in microgravity.

Some key highlights included:

Taking the first human X-ray in orbit

Performing exercise studies to prevent muscle and bone loss

Growing mushrooms in a zero-gravity environment

Using X-rays on electronics to test onboard diagnostics

Conducting a DXA scan to assess bone health

These studies pave the way for safer, longer missions beyond Earth.

One of the mission’s most notable discoveries happened after re-entry. The astronauts departed the Dragon spacecraft alone after it splashed down off the coast of California on April 4. This remark is crucial. It helps scientists understand how effectively astronauts can perform functional duties soon after spaceflight, which is vital for disaster recovery and future Mars missions.

From X-Rays to EEGs: SpaceX Pushing the Boundaries

The crew also took part in brain mapping using EEG and a continuous glucose monitoring investigation. These investigations looked at how body systems adapt to the peculiar environment of space, especially how fluids move in microgravity. These types of discoveries are critical for developing health standards for astronauts on future trips spanning months or even years.

The Fram2 crew successfully returned on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Resilience, which landed in the Pacific Ocean near Oceanside, California. The team was soon collected by the SpaceX recovery vessel Shannon and transferred to NASA’s Johnson Space Center for additional tests and recovery procedures. Their return, and the state in which they returned, demonstrates the success of both the technology and the training that underpin this operation.

SpaceX has once again pushed the bounds of space exploration.
