The company is moving from prototyping to large-scale production. This transition is accompanied by significant staffing and infrastructure enhancements at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. Over the past three months, Tesla has hired over 1,000 new employees. These new personnel are being trained and given factory tours to prepare them for the demands of production. Previously, fewer than 100 individuals worked on the Semi program. This move signals Tesla’s growing confidence in the Semi’s future.

A Factory Built for the Future

The Semi’s future is built on a strong foundation—Gigafactory Nevada. Located near Lake Tahoe, this huge facility is already one of the world’s leading makers of EV components. Every year, it creates billions of battery cells, energy storage devices, vehicle powertrains, and electric motors.

Tesla is currently constructing its facility with two key additions: a 100 GWh unit to create 4680 battery cells and its first full-scale Semi truck manufacturing. The complex is part of the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center and employs around 7,000 people as of the end of 2018. Tesla intends to increase that number to around 10,000 statewide. Tesla began producing energy products like the Powerwall here as early as 2016. Cell production followed in 2017, and the factory officially opened with a major event in July 2016.

A significant goal for this location is complete energy independence. Tesla intends to power it with a combination of solar, wind, and geothermal sources. CEO Elon Musk has stated that approximately 100 such plants will be required worldwide to fully switch to sustainable energy consumption. Dry electrode coating, for example, has the potential to reduce this figure by increasing efficiency. Dan Priestley, head of the Semi program, shared, “We’ve spent the last few months building out the shell. Now it’s time to install the tools and machinery.”

Initial production is set for late 2025, with high-volume manufacturing targeted for 2026.

The Push to Deliver Long-Awaited Orders

Tesla first unveiled the Semi in 2017. It was scheduled to begin manufacturing in 2019. However, delays due to battery shortages and other issues continued pushing the timeframe. The first delivery occurred in December 2022. PepsiCo was the first large customer. Walmart, Sysco, and Costco followed with their own delivery.

Tesla is currently striving to meet the backlog of orders. The recent hiring boom is viewed as an important step toward satisfying this need.

Over 80 Job Listings Signal Major Hiring Drive

A review of Tesla’s Careers website shows more than 80 open positions tied to the Semi program. Roles span from engineering in Palo Alto to manufacturing in Sparks and service in Sacramento.

These jobs cover vital areas such as:

Manufacturing operations

Quality assurance

Battery system design

Vehicle servicing

Each role contributes to the complex production process, especially given the Semi’s massive battery pack, which contains tens of thousands of individual cells.

High Hopes for 50,000 Units Annually

The size of Tesla’s ambition is obvious. The company plans to construct 50,000 Semi vehicles each year from its new Nevada location. This represents a substantial departure from the modest pilot production previously carried out in California.

If successful, the Semi might transform the freight business by providing greener, electric transportation options. As Dan Priestley stated, “The Semi is not just a truck—it’s a step forward for sustainable logistics.”

Tesla has not issued an official statement about the recent hiring or production timelines. Still, the signs are hard to ignore. Insider reports, job listings, and factory updates all point to one fact:

The Tesla Semi is finally gaining momentum.

Tesla is making rapid progress with its long-awaited electric semi truck.
