This means drivers can now see Supercharging session updates directly on their Lock Screen and Apple Watch, without having to launch the app. The update was officially released on May 27 and is available for download from the iOS App Store. To use it, your device must have iOS 17.2 or higher.

What Are Live Activities?

Apple introduced Live Activities with iOS 16. These are real-time notifications that appear on the Lock Screen or in the Dynamic Island of iPhone 14 Pro models and later. They are used to monitor live events such as food deliveries, ride-sharing progress, and gaming results. Tesla has recently joined the list with its Supercharging improvements.

Apple explains:

“Live Activities help people stay on top of tasks in real time, like tracking the progress of a ride or delivery.”

How Live Activities Work

When a Tesla begins Supercharging, a Live Activity automatically appears on your iPhone. Here’s what it shows:

Time remaining for charging

Current battery percentage

Estimated cost of the session

Charging speed and power in kilowatts

How much range or battery percentage has been added

This feature gives drivers a quick way to monitor charging progress. It’s especially helpful if you’re sitting in the car or grabbing coffee nearby.

Where Can You See the Updates?

On newer iPhones with a Dynamic Island, like iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro, you’ll see the data both on the Lock Screen and the Dynamic Island. Older iPhones only display the information on the Lock Screen. Apple Watch users will be able to see updates immediately on their wrist, making it even easier to remain informed.

Currently, Live Activities only work during Supercharging sessions. They do not show up when charging at home or using non-Supercharger stalls. Tesla may expand support in the future, but for now, the feature is limited to Superchargers.

Robotaxi Plans and Live Activities

This update isn’t just about charging. It lays the groundwork for Tesla’s upcoming robotaxi service, launching next month in Austin, Texas.

Live Activities will let robotaxi users:

Request rides

Track arrival times

Monitor trip progress

Get real-time updates on trip status

This will operate right from the Lock Screen, without the need to open the program. Tesla intends to begin with ten autonomous Model Y vehicles and scale up to 1,000 based on test outcomes.

Why This Matters

The use of Live Activities indicates a shift toward deeper iOS connectivity. It’s no longer simply about automobiles; it’s about delivering a seamless digital experience.

According to Not a Tesla App,

“The Supercharger Live Activity shows how much time is left in the session, your current charge percentage, an estimated cost, the charge speed, and how much energy you’ve added.”

With the robotaxi launch coming soon, these updates are a sign that Tesla is working to match (or exceed) what ride-hailing apps like Uber already offer.

Bonus: “Child Left Alone” Feature

In related news, Tesla is introducing a “Child Left Alone” safety alert. This update combines Tesla’s powerful in-cabin radar with real-time notifications to protect the most vulnerable passengers: young children. Tesla previously announced Cabin Overheat Protection, which automatically cools the vehicle’s interior to keep dogs and children safe. The “Child Left Alone” feature enhances this by including active detection and alert systems. It is a proactive method that recognizes when a child is present rather than simply reacting to temperature fluctuations.

The feature requires Tesla’s latest in-cabin radar system and is currently supported on:

Model Y (2022 and newer)

Model 3 (2024 and newer)

Cybertruck

Model S and Model X (2021 and newer)

Interestingly, this radar hardware has been built into many vehicles for years but remained unused until now. Tesla’s foresight is evident, with the company future-proofing cars well ahead of feature rollout.

The latest iOS app upgrade is more than just a small enhancement. It represents a significant change towards smarter, faster, and more user-friendly interactions for iPhone users. From supercharging updates to robotaxi preparedness, Live Activities are only the beginning.
