For many families, taking the Tesla Model Y on a skiing holiday is a no-brainer: a large boot, all-wheel drive on the Dual Motor versions, and a spacious interior. However, you still need to know how to load your skis without scratching the interior, preserve the range on the ascent and comply with the Mountain Code. Here\u2019s everything you need, from the car park at the start to the foot of the slopes.<\/p>\n

Skiing with the Tesla Model Y: loading skis inside<\/h2>\n

The Model Y\u2019s rear seat folds down in three 40\/20\/40 sections: by folding down just the central seat, the skis fit between the two passengers, with the edges pointing downwards. Slip them into a cover to protect the upholstery and armrest. This is the most efficient solution for range, as nothing protrudes above the roof. For a family of four with skis and snowboards, a long cover and a bit of organisation are usually enough. For a Tesla Model Y skiing holiday with four adults, however, the middle seat is missing: the roof box then becomes the most practical option again.<\/p>\n

Protecting the boot from snow and ski edges<\/h2>\n

Securing your load<\/h2>\n

A boot packed to the roof becomes dangerous when braking: boots, suitcases and helmets can be thrown forwards. The Model Y load compartment divider<\/a> (\u20ac159.90) separates the boot from the passenger compartment and secures the load, which is particularly useful if you partially fold down the rear seats. Place heavy items at the back, against the seatbacks, and lighter ones on top. When driving the Tesla Model Y to the ski slopes, braking distances on snow are longer: a securely stowed load also prevents items from hitting the windows.<\/p>\n

Roof box: the real cost in terms of range<\/h2>\n

A roof box is still an option with the right roof rails, but it does reduce range, particularly at motorway speeds. If you use one, reduce your speed by 10 km\/h and plan for an extra charging stop. When setting off on a skiing trip in your Tesla Model Y, plan your recharges before the ascent: the cold and the elevation gain drain the battery, whilst the descent will recover some of the energy through regenerative braking.
