Starlink Provides Lifeline to Flood-Hit Texas Communities

Starlink has been a lifeline for thousands in Central Texas following the region’s devastating flash floods. On Sunday, July 6, 2025, rampaging waters killed at least 67 people, including 21 children, and left many missing in Kerr County and the surrounding territories. With cell towers down and fiber links swept away, first responders have battled to coordinate rescues along the surging Guadalupe River. Now, SpaceX’s Starlink Mini satellite terminals are filling a critical gap by providing high-speed internet in areas where traditional networks are offline.

Families are staying in touch, getting emergency updates, and holding onto hope while towns mourn and search teams work around the clock.

Central Texas Battles Devastating Floods

Central Texas is seeing one of the most severe natural disasters in recent memory. On Sunday, July 6, 2025, flash floods struck Kerr County and its neighboring areas, submerging entire settlements. So far, at least 67 individuals have died, 21 of whom are children. Dozens more remain missing.

The devastating floodwaters struck suddenly, catching people near the Guadalupe River off unprepared. With phone towers destroyed and fiber links swept away, emergency crews have struggled to locate survivors. Communication difficulties have made rescue efforts considerably more difficult. As search and rescue personnel work to find missing people, families wait in terror and uncertainty. The death toll is certain to increase. The disaster transformed calm towns into disaster zones overnight.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised that the state will “stop at nothing” to find every missing person. Far away in Rome, Pope Leo XIV also shared his sorrow.

“I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones, in particular their daughters who were in summer camp, in the disaster caused by the flooding of the Guadalupe River in Texas in the United States,” the Pope said. “We pray for them.”

Starlink Steps Up to Restore Communication

To help bridge this deadly gap, SpaceX’s Starlink has stepped in. The company is now offering its brand-new Starlink Mini satellite terminals to search and rescue teams.

These mini units are approximately the size of a suitcase. They are light and easy to transport. Each kit can be powered by either a vehicle’s inverter or a small generator. They can self-align with Starlink satellites in about two minutes. This means that rescue workers can use high-speed internet in areas where traditional networks are still down.

Free Service Helps Thousands Stay Connected

SpaceX is not only assisting rescue crews. The corporation has declared that it will eliminate one month’s service fees for thousands of customers in the disaster zone.

Anyone who still has power—or can power the dish with a battery pack—may get their equipment back online for free. This enables families to check on loved ones, receive real-time weather alerts, and be aware of evacuation instructions. In a crisis, being connected might mean the difference between life and death.

Not Starlink’s First Disaster Response

This is the first major use of Starlink’s Mini terminals in the U.S., but the company is no stranger to disaster zones.

In the past, Starlink kept hospitals and relief centers online in Florida after hurricanes. Their terminals were also used in Japan after earthquakes and in Ukraine during conflicts. The Mini kits make emergency deployment even easier. Each unit weighs less than 3 kg and can fit into a backpack. This portability is a huge advantage for first responders working in remote areas.

Starlink’s engineers have set up a base near Kerrville Municipal Airport. From there, they can quickly send extra Mini kits wherever they are needed most. Officials say the free service will continue through the critical recovery phase. Even when the floods recede, internet access will help families file insurance claims and allow relief groups to coordinate aid efforts. It may be weeks before normal networks are fully restored.

These devastating floods have caused unspeakable loss. However, the rapid deployment of Starlink’s Mini terminals exemplifies how modern technology may assist communities in crisis. As Texas begins its long road to recovery, the hope is that better communication can save lives and reunite families. Staying connected during natural disasters has never been more important.
