The 2026 Tesla Mountain Act: a guide for property owners

Loi Montagne Tesla : roues complètes hiver pour Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Mountain Law is the same rule as for all cars, but with constraints specific to electric vehicles: tight wheel arches, instant torque and high weight. From 1 November to 31 March, driving in the affected areas requires specific equipment. Here’s what the legislation states for 2026 and how to comply without any hassle.

Tesla Mountain Law: what the legislation says

Since the winter of 2021–2022, the Mountain Law 2 has applied every year from 1 November to 31 March. In the municipalities designated by prefectural order, spread across 34 departments in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Jura, the Vosges and Corsica, all vehicles must either be fitted with four winter tyres or carry removable anti-skid devices capable of fitting at least two drive wheels. Signs mark the entry and exit points of these zones.

Winter tyres: the 3PMSF marking is compulsory

Since 1 November 2024, only tyres bearing the 3PMSF symbol – a three-peaked mountain with a snowflake – are recognised as winter tyres. The simple ‘M S’ marking is no longer sufficient. For the Tesla Mountain Law, this is the most convenient solution: you can drive as normal throughout the winter, without having to fit anything by the roadside. The 19-inch PL06 wheel sets for the Model Y (€849.90) also mean you don’t have to remove your summer tyres every season. Our Tesla winter tyre guide compares the options.

Chains or snow socks: the legal alternative

If you keep your summer tyres on, you must carry snow chains or snow socks in the boot that comply with the relevant standard, for example EN 16662-1 for textile snow socks. On Teslas, the space between the tyre and the suspension is often limited: traditional metal snow chains are not recommended. Snow socks or front snow chains (€429.00), which are fitted to the outside of the wheel, get round this problem. Full details can be found in our article on Tesla snow chains.

Rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive: which wheels should you fit them to?

The Tesla Mountain Law applies to the drive wheels. On a rear-wheel-drive model, snow chains or socks are fitted to the rear wheels. On a dual-motor (all-wheel drive) version, all four wheels are driven: fitting them to the front is often recommended to maintain steering control, but fitting all four remains the safest option when driving downhill. Check the recommendations in your owner’s manual, and practise fitting them in the garage before setting off on your first ski trip.

Tesla Mountain Law: checks and penalties

The legislation provides for a fine of €135 for non-compliance in a designated area, and the police may prevent you from continuing your journey. Beyond the fine, the real risk remains that of an accident or getting stuck on a snow-covered incline, with a heavy car that leaves no room for improvisation. The official details are explained on securite-routiere.gouv.fr.

The Tesla Mountain Law checklist

  • four 3PMSF-marked tyres fitted, or compliant snow chains and tyre socks in the boot;
  • tyre sizes checked on the sidewall before purchase;
  • Functioning TPMS pressure sensors on the winter tyres;
  • gloves, a head torch and a mat for fitting;
  • sufficient charge: cold weather increases energy consumption.

Planning for range in the mountains

Cold temperatures and elevation changes increase energy consumption, sometimes significantly. Pre-heat the battery via the app before setting off, plan a charging stop before the climb and allow for a margin when you arrive at your destination. Also consider TPMS valves (€31.95) if your winter tyres do not have them. Our Tesla range advice for winter rounds off your preparations.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Mountain Law apply to the whole of France? No, onlyto the municipalities listed by prefectural decree, from 1 November to 31 March.

Are my M S tyres still valid? No, since November 2024 the 3PMSF marking is required.

Are all-season tyres suitable? Yes, provided they bear the 3PMSF symbol.

Do I need snow chains if I have winter tyres? No, not under the law, but a B26 sign may require snow chains on a case-by-case basis.

Green Drive’s advice

To comply with the Tesla Mountain Law without any hassle when you frequently drive up to ski resorts, complete winter wheel sets remain the simplest solution, with snow chains serving as a backup. All snow equipment is available in the snow chains and equipment section.
