Tesla AI6 Chip Will Skip U.S. for Early Production

Tesla continues to expand the boundaries further with its next-generation AI6 chip. This powerful CPU is planned to power the company’s next high-volume products, such as the Cybercab and the humanoid robot Optimus. But here’s a twist: early production will not begin in the United States. Instead, the initial sample runs will take place in South Korea, at Samsung’s local facilities. 

However, major production will eventually transfer to Samsung’s huge Taylor, Texas plant beginning in 2025. With billions already invested, this relationship is poised to be one of the most significant in the worldwide chip business.

First AI6 Units to Roll Out in South Korea

According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung will handle the first batch of AI6 chip samples at its domestic foundry and packaging facilities. This step indicates Tesla’s emphasis on speed and reliability in testing prior to scaling up. The Texas foundry will only take over when it is fully operational. The factory is anticipated to commence operations in 2025, with investments beginning this year. This step-by-step arrangement enables Tesla to have early access to chips without having to wait for the US factory to be ready.

Samsung’s 2nm Breakthrough

Samsung has already completed the process design kit for its second-generation 2nm technology. Compared to earlier nodes, this provides a 12% increase in performance, 25% less power consumption, and an 8% smaller chip area. These improvements are huge. Efficiency and small design are critical in AI-driven devices such as Optimus and Cybercab. Tesla receives chips that are quicker, cooler, and designed for next-generation computing.

Tesla’s Massive $16.5 Billion Deal

Tesla has signed a $16.5 billion supply contract with Samsung to ensure the manufacture of the AI6 semiconductors. Elon Musk has even stated that this number is merely the “bare minimum.” With Tesla prepared to develop robots and autonomous driving, demand may easily drive the deal considerably larger. Samsung considers this a lifeline. Its US foundry businesses have struggled to compete with giants such as TSMC. This transaction adds significant revenue and credibility to its business.

Elon Musk on the Partnership

Musk has not hidden his excitement about Samsung’s role. On X, he said he would “walk the line personally” to speed up progress in the chip facility. In another post, he revealed he had a video call with Samsung’s chairman and top leadership to discuss what a “real partnership” would mean. His words highlight Tesla’s hands-on approach and its expectation for deep collaboration. Musk’s involvement is also a signal that AI6 chips are mission-critical for Tesla’s future.

The Contract Timeline

According to Samsung’s regulatory filing, the contract will officially commence on July 26, 2025. It will last until December 31, 2033, representing nearly a decade of partnership. Once Samsung’s Texas manufacturing facility is ready for full-scale production, the chips will be made there. This long-term arrangement eliminates Tesla’s concerns about chip shortages, which have plagued numerous automakers in recent years.

Securing sophisticated chips ensures that Tesla’s future vehicles and robots will run on specialized hardware suited for AI tasks. For Samsung, the agreement enhances its position in the global foundry battle. It also shows that companies other than traditional chipmakers, such as Qualcomm, find value in Samsung’s 2nm technology. The partnership also underlines how tightly the auto and semiconductor industries are now linked. Cars are no longer just machines; they are computers on wheels.

Tesla’s AI6 chip is more than just a processor. It symbolizes the company’s investment in AI-powered robotics, self-driving vehicles, and data-intensive systems.
