Tesla has finally begun its much-anticipated Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. For the first time, Tesla cars without a driver are transporting paying passengers on public streets. According to one legal expert, “In Texas, the permit is easy to get and lose.”

Musk views the robotaxi industry as critical to Tesla’s financial future. Industry analysts agree that Tesla’s current stock valuation is heavily dependent on the success of its autonomous endeavors. However, there are risks associated with commercialization. Cruise, owned by General Motors, was forced to suspend operations following a major accident. If Tesla wants to be the leader in this field, it must first acquire and sustain public trust.
The Austin pilot represents an important first step. According to autonomous car expert Philip Koopman, “This is the end of the beginning—not the beginning of the end.” Tesla has to show that it can scale securely and effectively.
