Starlink is set to enter India through a groundbreaking partnership between Bharti Airtel and SpaceX. Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator, has agreed to bring SpaceX’s satellite internet service to the country. This alliance intends to improve connection, particularly in remote and underserved areas where standard broadband fails to reach. However, the official launch is still pending regulatory permission. Once approved, this collaboration might represent a significant shift in India’s internet landscape, providing high-speed, dependable connection via Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite network.
Expanding Internet Access with Starlink
According to this arrangement, Airtel will distribute Starlink equipment through its retail network. The collaboration intends to give corporate solutions to organizations in remote places. Both companies are committed to digital inclusiveness. They intend to connect underserved areas, such as rural schools and healthcare services.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell also expressed excitement. She stated, “We are excited to work with Airtel and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India.” She emphasized Airtel’s importance in India’s telecom industry and the potential of this partnership.
Strengthening Airtel’s Network
Starlink’s satellite infrastructure will complement Airtel’s current network. This could boost connection in areas where standard telecom infrastructure fails. Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel, emphasised this. He continued: “Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone and further demonstrates our commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity.”
Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles
Starlink has faced multiple challenges in India. In 2021, it accepted pre-orders without the necessary licensing. This prompted government action, requiring SpaceX to suspend sales and reimburse deposits. Despite this, indications indicate that Starlink’s license application is proceeding forward.
Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met, which led to the cooperation. Since then, Tesla has taken moves to penetrate the Indian market. The company has signed a lease for its first shop in Mumbai and is organizing hiring events.
Debate Over Satellite Spectrum Allocation
The advent of Starlink in India has spurred debate over how satellite spectrum should be distributed. One major issue of debate is whether the spectrum should be auctioned or assigned administratively. Elon Musk has argued for a direct allocation paradigm, claiming that satellite-based internet works differently than traditional telecom services. On the other side, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, a significant participant in India’s telecom industry, believes that satellite spectrum, like mobile network frequencies, should be auctioned.
This debate has resulted in extensive lobbying by both sides. Industry analysts believe that an auction-based strategy will raise prices for satellite service providers such as Starlink, potentially limiting their capacity to deliver inexpensive internet connectivity in rural and distant locations.
Airtel and SpaceX are awaiting final approvals to launch Starlink in India. If successful, this partnership could revolutionize internet access, especially in rural areas. It may also pave the way for further technological advancements in the country’s digital landscape.
