Elon Musk Plans “Grokipedia” as Rival to Wikipedia

Elon Musk is taking on Wikipedia with a bold new project called Grokipedia, which he claims will be a massive improvement in how people access and share knowledge online. For years, Wikipedia has been the go-to site for quick facts and research. It is free, widely used, and trusted by millions worldwide. However, Elon Musk now believes it needs competition. His AI business, xAI, is creating a new platform dubbed “Grokipedia.” Musk claims it will be a “massive improvement” over Wikipedia, giving greater access to knowledge and fewer constraints on what is reliable.

This announcement came after Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger raised concerns about the site’s editorial practices. He argued that the platform blocks certain viewpoints, especially from conservative outlets, while favoring liberal-leaning sources. Elon Musk has long criticized Wikipedia as “woke,” and this new project reflects his ongoing push to change how people access information online.

The Blacklist Debate

Larry Sanger recently spoke on the Tucker Carlson Show about Wikipedia’s “Reliable sources/Perennial sources” page. This page ranks publications by credibility. He highlighted that conservative outlets such as Fox News, the Daily Caller, and the New York Post are treated as unreliable. At the same time, outlets like The New York Times, CNN, and Mother Jones are considered trustworthy.

Sanger argued that this selective ranking creates a bias. According to him, it limits perspectives and narrows public debate. He also posted on X that 85% of Wikipedia’s most influential editorial accounts are anonymous. He called them the “Power 62.” Musk echoed this, posting “Curiouser and curiouser,” and even joked that the platform should be renamed “Wokipedia.”

Elon Musk’s Plan for Grokipedia

Musk claims Grokipedia will be more than just a knowledge site. It will be part of xAI‘s overarching goal to “understand the Universe.” Unlike Wikipedia, which filters sources, Grokipedia is anticipated to accept more input. Musk believes that it will stimulate the free exchange of knowledge, providing consumers with access to different perspectives rather than a limited selection.

The new platform will also rely on Grok, xAI’s chatbot trained on web data, including public tweets. Musk claims Grok can scan Wikipedia pages, spot errors or missing context, and rewrite them with corrections. This could make Grokipedia more dynamic than traditional encyclopedias.

Past Criticism of Wikipedia

Musk has clashed with Wikipedia before. In January, he criticized a Wikipedia entry that suggested he made a Nazi-like salute at a Trump event. He also argued that the site should be defunded, claiming it had become politically biased.

These tensions have fueled his decision to build Grokipedia. For Musk, it’s about creating a platform where multiple narratives can exist, not just one approved version.

Challenges Ahead

Despite Musk’s ambitions, experts warn that creating a genuine competitor to Wikipedia will not be easy. Wikipedia has been online since 2001 and is one of the most popular websites in the world. Its community-driven model and emphasis on citations have maintained it trustworthy, if not faultless.

Critics point out that Musk’s own platforms, such as X, have been accused of propagating misinformation. Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, has defended the site, claiming that it prioritizes accuracy over politics.

Musk has not shared a launch date for Grokipedia yet. But supporters of his vision believe it could reshape how knowledge is shared online. For many young people, it might offer a chance to explore a wider range of sources and perspectives.

Whether Grokipedia succeeds or not, it shows Musk’s determination to challenge existing systems. Just as he disrupted industries like cars and space travel, he now wants to shake up the world of digital information.
