Tesla sales in China in 2026: 9% in January; Musk refocuses on AI and autonomous driving

Tesla sales in China in 2026: a strong start to the year despite the competition

Tesla sales in China in 2026 have got off to a positive start: in January 2026, deliveries of vehicles produced in China (Giga Shanghai) rose by more than 9% compared to January 2025. This result is all the more remarkable given that Tesla faces fierce local competition from BYD, NIO, Xpeng and other Chinese manufacturers that dominate their domestic market. The ramp-up of the new Model Y is contributing significantly to this upturn in performance.

Giga Shanghai: the cornerstone of Tesla’s global production

The Shanghai factory remains Tesla’s main global production hub, assembling the Model 3 and Model Y for China and for export to Europe, Australia and other markets. In 2025, Giga Shanghai produced and delivered over 700,000 vehicles, accounting for approximately 43% of Tesla’s global production. The plant’s total capacity exceeds one million units per year, making Shanghai Tesla’s key strategic asset in Asia.

BYD: the rival that won’t give an inch

In China, BYD has overtaken Tesla in sales volume since 2022 and is consolidating its dominance. The Chinese giant sold over 1.76 million fully electric vehicles in 2025, compared to around 700,000 for Tesla in China. BYD benefits from a very wide range, a strong national identity, and highly competitive prices. However, Tesla retains a strong premium image and remains the preferred foreign brand among Chinese consumers in the high-end electric segment.

Tesla’s China strategy in 2026

Elon Musk has clearly stated his intention to reposition Tesla as an AI company rather than simply a car manufacturer. In China, this translates into the roll-out of supervised FSD (pending local regulatory approval), the development of energy services (Powerwall, Megapack), and a strategy to move upmarket with advanced features. Tesla is seeking to differentiate itself not on price, but on the technological experience.

The impact of tariffs and geopolitical tensions

Trade tensions between the US and China are creating uncertainty for Tesla. If US tariffs on Chinese goods rise, this could impact exports from Giga Shanghai. Conversely, Chinese retaliatory measures could hit Tesla’s operations in China. Tesla’s reliance on Giga Shanghai remains a geopolitical risk to be monitored closely.

Tesla Energy in China: a rapidly growing market

Beyond cars, Tesla is actively expanding its energy storage operations in China. Megapack solutions aimed at Chinese electricity grid operators represent a potentially huge market. By 2025, Tesla’s energy revenues had grown by 26.5% to reach $12.8 billion globally, with China as the priority market going forward.
