A bench that folds flat, two metres of floor, climate control all night: Tesla camping is not a workaround but a feature. Camp Mode, fitted mattresses, frunk coolers: here is how to turn your Model Y or Model 3 into a mini camper — full equipment list included.

Camp Mode: climate all night, guilt-free
Enabled from the screen (Climate > Camp), Camp Mode holds temperature, ventilation and ambient lighting through the night, screen dimmed and alarm adapted. Real consumption: 5-8% of battery per night depending on weather — 25-40 km worth. Near a Supercharger or on a campsite socket, Tesla camping becomes literally unlimited.
The bed: the centrepiece
Bench folded, the Model Y offers nearly 2 metres of almost-flat floor — and “almost” makes all the difference at 3 a.m. Two dedicated answers: the fitted inflatable mattress (€84.90) hugging the contours and inflating from the 12 V socket, or the premium folding foam mattress (€239.90), proper-bed comfort that stores in the boot. The comfort topper (€99.90) completes things for side sleepers.

Privacy and darkness: camping sunshades
Sleeping in a glass-roofed car demands blackout: the camping side-window shades (€79.90) and the panoramic roof shade (€29.95) turn the cabin into a dark room — and insulate thermally in the bargain. The full anti-heat range lives in our dedicated section, summer and winter alike.
Camp kitchen: the frunk turns fridge
The fitted frunk cooler (€99.90) exploits the front trunk for fresh food — reachable without disturbing the bed. For long stays, the high-capacity electric sub-boot cooler (€699.90) runs off the car. Add the 7.4 kW campsite-plug mobile charger to top up on CEE sockets — details in our charging guide.
The Tesla camper’s checklist
- fitted mattress + compact bedding;
- camping sunshades all round;
- stocked frunk cooler;
- TPE mats — morning dew forgives little;
- mobile charger and adapters (charging section);
- arrive with 60% battery minimum for the night plus next day.
Routes: planning a Tesla camping road trip
The golden rule of Tesla camping: pitch your nights within 30 km of a Supercharger or in a campsite with CEE sockets. The ABRP app (A Better Route Planner) combined with Tesla’s planner chains the legs so you arrive each evening with the needed margin. The community’s favourite European routes: the Atlantic coast along motorway Superchargers, the Alsace wine road, and the gorges of southern France where high-altitude spots offer spectacular wake-ups — battery pre-warmed by the rising sun. On the rules: overnight parking is free unless locally restricted, while “camping” (awning, furniture out) can be limited by municipal order, as official public-service guidance details (service-public.fr). In a Tesla everything stays inside: you simply sleep parked.

Frequently asked questions
Does Tesla camping drain the battery? Camp Mode uses 5-8% per night: plan the margin, that is all.
Can two sleep in a Model Y? Yes, comfortably on a fitted mattress; the Model 3 suits solo or very close sleepers.
Is Camp Mode noisy? The ventilation is discreet, far quieter than a motorhome generator.
Where is it allowed? Wherever overnight parking is: dedicated areas, campsites, private land with consent.
Green Drive’s take
