Tesla has been working on its unique diner, drive-in cinema, and Supercharger project in Los Angeles for almost a year and a half. A recent update indicates that the site is nearing completion, with the addition of solar canopies. On Sunday, X user AlSet51241438 published videos and photographs of three solar canopies that had been constructed at the location. The front parking lot is almost finished. Tesla continues to pave and construct V4 Supercharger stalls in the region.
Despite immense progress, Tesla has yet to announce the official opening date for the LA Diner and Supercharger. A reference to the Supercharger Diner was found in Tesla’s internal software update code. This means that Tesla is aiming to integrate the diner’s menu with its vehicle system.
Hiring for the Diner Experience
Tesla officially began hiring for its Los Angeles cafe project in August, indicating that the cafe is getting closer to opening. Tesla advertised for a “Tesla Diner Experience Specialist,” who would shape and manage the client experience. This specialist will be in charge of a variety of activities, including managing the audiovisual content exhibited in the restaurant, reviewing and revising the menu, and collaborating with Tesla’s design teams to create a seamless and engaging environment for guests.
The job posting suggests that Tesla envisions this diner as more than just a food stop—it is designed to be a full-fledged entertainment destination that embodies the brand’s innovative spirit.
The Journey from Concept to Reality
The Tesla Diner concept was born in 2018 when CEO Elon Musk tweeted about his ambition for “an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant.” In 2021, the company registered a trademark for its restaurant services. After gaining several building approvals between 2022 and 2023, Tesla commenced construction in September 2023.
The diner will have two screens and a food menu that appears in the vehicle’s system when it is parked. Musk had previously proposed “an outdoor screen that plays a highlight reel of the best scenes in movie history.”
Tesla’s Focus at Giga Berlin
Meanwhile, Tesla’s Giga Berlin facility celebrated its third anniversary. In an interview with German news site Frankfurter Allgemeine, senior director Andre Thierig discussed a variety of topics. He addressed concerns about Elon Musk’s political stance, future trade wars, and dwindling sales in Germany.
Thierig emphasized that Tesla remains focused on vehicle production. “We as a company and even more so as a factory location have never positioned ourselves politically,” he stated. “We focus on what we do best, namely to build cars, and very good and very many.”
Addressing Sales Decline in Germany
Tesla’s sales in Germany fell in February, but Thierig ascribed this to the changeover from the old Model Y to the updated version. The factory momentarily suspended production to accommodate the shift. He could not disclose pre-order statistics, but he said the factory is increasing output.
“We in the Gigafactory do not sell, we produce,” Thierig said. “Our delivery locations here and on the airport site in Neuhardenberg are relatively empty, so the cars are quickly entering the market.”
Tariffs and Supply Chain Resilience
Regarding potential tariffs from a future Trump administration, Thierig highlighted Tesla’s efforts to localize suppliers. “92 percent of components for the Model Y now come from Europe,” he explained. “This makes us even more resilient to disturbances in world trade.”
He added that Tesla’s high level of vertical integration has helped the company navigate past crises, including the pandemic, chip shortages, and geopolitical conflicts.
