Tesla Model Y, the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, has been strategically refreshed to suit changing customer expectations and increased competition. This upgrade blends new design elements with practical functionality, highlighting Tesla’s commitment to consumer feedback. Tesla hopes to reinforce its position in an increasingly competitive market, notably in China, by improving range, updating functionality, and making small interior changes.
Tesla’s Response to Competition
The Model Y has been a bestseller for Tesla, but competition has been tough, particularly in China. Companies such as Xiaomi, which delivered over 130,000 units of its first model in 2024, and BYD, China’s largest EV vendor, have challenged Tesla’s dominance.
Tesla’s market share in China’s electric vehicle sector has dropped from 11.7% in 2023 to 10.4% in 2024. As local companies improve with smart features and elegant designs, Tesla must innovate to keep its lead.
Updated Features of the New Tesla Model Y
The Model Y’s most recent upgrade contains several intriguing new features. These include a revamped appearance with a new full-width light strip in both the front and back, akin to Tesla’s Cybertruck. The interior has also been updated to improve comfort and convenience, with ventilated and heated seats for all weather conditions and a new touchscreen for rear passengers.
The long-range edition now has a driving range of 719 kilometers per charge, up 5% from the previous model. This innovation may help Tesla appeal to customers searching for longer-range electric cars.
Tesla Model Y: Price and Availability
The new Model Y will cost 263,500 yuan ($35,900) in China, a 5.4% increase over the previous edition. Deliveries are planned to start in March, assuming regulatory permission. The Model Y is also available for pre-order in other Asia-Pacific areas, however, availability in North America and Europe has yet to be confirmed.
Key Design Changes
Tesla has made significant changes to the exterior design, including:
- A full-width LED light bar at the front and back.
- A new bumper and significantly modified side mirrors.
- The trunk lid features sleek “T E S L A” writing.
- A new Glacier Blue paint option, priced at ¥8,000 (approximately $1,090).
The Model Y will also include two new wheel options: 19″ Interactive Storm Wheels and 20″ Spiral Storm Wheels. These improvements offer the car a new design, allowing it to stand out in a competitive market.
Tesla Model Y: Interior Updates and New Features
Inside, the Model Y has the same LED ambient lighting, steering wheel, and center console as the Model 3. A turn signal stalk replaces the traditional gear stalk, and special Launch Edition models include unique badges and puddle lights. In the new Model Y, there is a touchscreen for the second-row passengers, which improves the driving experience.
Keeping the Turn Signal Stalk: A Nod to Customer Feedback
Tesla has recently adopted a minimalist interior design, particularly with its Model S, Model X, and Model 3. This includes the contentious choice to eliminate the turn signal stalk, which sparked outrage from many drivers. However, with the updated Model Y, Tesla has decided to keep the stalk, blending its distinctive clean style with a focus on functionality.
Tesla referred to the new stalk as “precision-engineered” and “refined based on valuable customer feedback.” While the specifics of the modifications remain unclear, the decision indicates Tesla’s knowledge of its consumers’ wants. The stalk ensures that the Model Y retains its user-friendliness without jeopardizing the brand’s signature futuristic look.
Customizable Steering Wheel Controls
Tesla also included new steering wheel controls with the Model Y update. These adjustable switches enable drivers to rapidly access the vehicle’s most commonly utilized functions. This feature aims to make the driving experience simpler to use, personalize the controls, and keep the automobile approachable to a wide variety of purchasers.

Xiaomi’s Response: Confidence in the YU7
Tesla’s competitors paid attention to the debut of the Model Y update. Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, responded to Tesla’s announcement on Weibo with a single word: “Ok.” This brief but confident response demonstrates Xiaomi’s expectation that the incoming YU7 SUV will compete with Tesla’s redesigned Model Y.
The YU7, which is scheduled to ship in mid-2025, is intended to compete directly with the Model Y. The YU7 has a larger cabin than the Model Y, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm versus 2,890 mm for the latter. This extra area may appeal to families or people looking for more room in their EVs. The YU7 also packs a punch, with dual electric motors producing a peak output of 508 kW and a top speed of 253 kilometers per hour. However, Tesla has a weight advantage—up to 413 kg lighter—which translates to improved energy efficiency.
The Battle Between Tesla and Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s entry into the EV sector has been game-changing. After shipping over 135,000 units of its first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan, in 2024, Xiaomi has quickly established itself as a household name in China’s fast-expanding EV business. Xiaomi’s YU7 positions itself as a formidable challenger to Tesla, particularly with its bigger size and great performance specs.
While the Model Y has a CLTC range of 719 kilometers (447 miles), the range of the YU7 remains unknown. However, the YU7’s size and capabilities indicate that it could provide a major challenge to the Model Y when it hits the market in mid-2025. As the EV market grows, the competition between these two giants will undoubtedly determine the future of electric transport, particularly in China—a critical battleground for EV producers.
Outlook for Tesla’s Future in China
Despite the upgrades, many are skeptical that Tesla will reclaim its former dominance in China. Tesla faces heavy competition from rivals like Xiaomi, which plans to debut new models like the YU7 SUV and Xpeng’s G7. Furthermore, Tesla has yet to completely integrate its advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in China, which may put it at a competitive disadvantage compared to local manufacturers that place a high value on smart driving technologies.
The refreshed Tesla Model Y represents a blend of intelligent updates and futuristic design, to maintain its appeal in a fast-expanding EV landscape. However, as powerful competitors such as Xiaomi and BYD gain traction, Tesla faces an uphill battle to maintain its dominance, especially in China. By responding to user feedback, Tesla strikes a balance between innovation and usability.
