Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai is the journey of speed, scale, and ambition. What started as an empty piece of land in 2019 has now become one of the most productive electric vehicle factories in the world. In just six years, the plant has crossed a massive milestone: four million vehicles built. This achievement shows how fast Tesla has grown in China and how important the Shanghai factory has become for the global EV market. As Tesla shared, the site is now rolling out a new car roughly every 30 seconds. That level of production would have seemed impossible a few years ago, but today it reflects China’s booming clean-energy sector and Tesla’s drive to lead it.
A Fast Start That Changed Everything
Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai began its journey in January 2019. Construction moved at a speed rarely seen in the auto industry. By October 2019, Model 3 production had already started. The first cars were delivered in December of the same year, mostly to Tesla employees. This was a big moment, as it proved Tesla could build cars in China with the same quality and energy as its US plants.
By the end of 2020, the factory was producing around 150,000 cars annually. This early success set the tone for what would become one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle plants.
Scaling Up at Record Speed
Production didn’t just grow—it exploded. By September 2023, less than three years after first building EVs, Giga Shanghai had reached its two millionth vehicle. Fast forward to December 2025, and the number has doubled to four million. This means Tesla produced another two million cars in just about two years. The company shared an impressive detail:
“Output rose from 3 million to 4 million in about 14 months.”
This rapid scaling shows Tesla’s unique approach to manufacturing and China’s strong support for the new energy vehicle sector.

A Factory With Nearly 1 Million Cars Per Year Capacity
Today, Giga Shanghai can produce more than 950,000 vehicles per year. In the first three quarters of this year alone, Tesla delivered 675,000 cars from this plant. It is also the only factory that builds the Model Y L, a longer wheelbase version of the Model Y made specifically for China. This model shows how Tesla is customizing its lineup for local needs while using the plant’s flexibility to stay ahead of competitors.
A Global Hub for Tesla’s EV Supply
Giga Shanghai is not just serving China. It has played a huge role in Tesla’s global strategy. For years, the factory exported thousands of cars every month to Europe and the Asia-Pacific. It even helped support Gigafactory Berlin by supplying the Model Y and handling all European Model 3 deliveries until Berlin’s own production plans expanded. In October alone, the Shanghai plant exported more than 35,000 vehicles, the highest monthly export figure in two years.
Why This Milestone Matters
Reaching four million cars in six years proves something important: Giga Shanghai is one of Tesla’s most valuable assets. Its speed, scale, and efficiency show how far Tesla has come since its early manufacturing challenges. The plant’s pace also hints at what comes next. Based on current trends, Tesla could reach its five millionth vehicle from this plant by late next year or early 2027.
Tesla is also expanding beyond vehicles in Shanghai. In February, the company launched production at its new Megafactory, a facility dedicated to building Megapack energy-storage units. This is Tesla’s second major site in Shanghai and the first Megafactory outside the US. The addition shows that Tesla is investing heavily in China, not just for EVs but also for clean energy products.
Tesla’s four-million milestone at Giga Shanghai marks a new chapter in its global journey. The plant now produces nearly half of Tesla’s worldwide deliveries. With a car leaving the production line every 30 seconds, it stands as a symbol of efficiency and progress.
As the world shifts faster toward electric mobility, Giga Shanghai will continue to be one of the strongest forces driving Tesla forward.
