Tesla has partnered with Uber Freight to introduce a new program that streamlines the process for companies to utilize electric heavy-duty trucks. Announced at the Deliver 2025 conference, the Dedicated EV Fleet Accelerator Program is designed to remove the biggest barrier to switching from diesel to electric: the high upfront cost.
By offering subsidies and guaranteed freight contracts, this program allows companies to enter the electric freight market with less risk. As Uber Freight explained, “This first-of-its-kind buyer’s program is designed to make electric freight more affordable and accessible by addressing key adoption barriers.”
Tackling the Cost Barrier
Electric trucks, such as the Tesla Semi, ultimately save money in the long run. They use less energy, need less maintenance, and avoid the rising costs of diesel fuel. But the challenge is their price. The upfront cost of a Tesla Semi has been a major obstacle for many fleets. Uber Freight is addressing this issue by subsidizing the purchase price. This means companies can get started without spending as much, while also gaining dedicated freight contracts to keep their trucks moving from the first day.
Benefits of the Program
The program is designed to help companies transition smoothly. It offers three major benefits:
- Subsidized Price – Tesla Semis cost less upfront with Uber Freight’s support.
- Predictable Growth – Companies gain access to Uber Freight’s network of shippers, ensuring steady revenue.
- Optimized Utilization – Trucks are matched with consistent freight, keeping them fully in use.
These benefits create immediate returns and reduce uncertainty for early adopters.
Promising Pilot Results
Before launching, Uber Freight tested the program in California with Tesla Semis. Over two months, the trucks covered 12,377 miles in 394 hours, with an energy use of 1.72 kWh per mile—matching Tesla’s estimates. Charging took only 60 hours, showing that the trucks are practical even for high-demand routes.
Companies in the pilot reported savings and efficiency. One early adopter, New Legend, shared: “Running electric trucks in Northern California was new territory for us, but the cost savings quickly became clear. With Uber Freight’s support and partnership, we had the confidence to invest in our fleet’s long-term performance.”
Tesla Semi’s Competitive Edge
The Tesla Semi has impressive features that give it an advantage over traditional diesel trucks:
- Range – Up to 500 miles on a single charge.
- Fast Charging – Up to 1.2 MW charging speed.
- Payload Capacity – 45,000–47,000 lbs.
When compared to diesel trucks that average only 6–8 miles per gallon, the Semi stands out. Charging costs are estimated at just 20–30% of diesel’s fuel equivalent. Plus, its simpler electric drivetrain can cut maintenance costs by up to 40%.
What’s Next for the Program
The exact cost of the Tesla Semi under this initiative remains unknown. Tesla originally announced a price range of $150,000 to $180,000 in 2017, but industry reports indicate that pricing may have risen since then. Despite this, the program’s incentives and long-term savings are expected to encourage uptake.
Tesla plans to begin volume production of the Semi in 2026, alongside the rollout of its Megacharger network. These fast-charging stations will make long-haul electric trucking more practical across the U.S.
This agreement represents a significant step toward cleaner, more efficient freight transportation. By cutting expenses and providing revenue stability, Uber Freight and Tesla are assisting transportation companies in taking a risk-free step into the logistics future. For young people entering the workforce or studying sustainability, this is a clear illustration of how large corporations are transforming industries to address both environmental and economic concerns simultaneously.
