Tesla tyre pressure in winter: the correct figures in 5 points

Pression pneus Tesla hiver : pneus Nokian pour Model Y

Checking your Tesla’s tyre pressure in winter is the simplest – yet most overlooked – adjustment during the cold season. Every time there’s a cold snap, warnings light up on the screen, yet many drivers continue to drive for a few days with under-inflated tyres. Here are the correct pressure levels, the best time to check them and the mistakes to avoid.

Tesla tyre pressure in winter: why it drops

The air inside the tyre contracts in the cold. As a rough guide, you lose around 0.1 bar for every 10 °C drop: a tyre inflated to the correct pressure in a garage at 20 °C will be under-inflated by around 0.3 bar in the early morning when the temperature is -10 °C. No leaks, just physics: this is why Tesla tyre pressure needs to be checked more often in winter than in summer. On a heavy Tesla, this difference is enough to increase shoulder wear, impair handling and reduce range.

What pressure should you aim for on your Tesla?

The reference is the label stuck to the driver’s door pillar, and nowhere else. On many Model 3 and Model Y cars, it’s around 2.9 bar when cold, but each tyre fitment and version has its own value: the Model S and Model X differ further still. With Model Y or Model 3 winter tyres, stick to this baseline value; some manufacturers recommend adding 0.1 to 0.2 bar – check the tyre specifications for details. Tesla winter tyre pressure should always be checked when the tyres are cold, never after a journey.

Measuring at the right time

The best time is in the morning, before driving, with the car having been parked outside overnight. After a session at a Supercharger or a long motorway journey, warm tyres can easily read 0.2 to 0.3 bar higher. Beware of the heated garage trap: if you inflate your tyres at 15 °C and then drive in -5 °C conditions, allow a little extra to ensure the pressure matches the value on the tyre label once outside. The car’s display will show the tyre pressures after a few minutes’ driving.

The effects of under-inflation in winter

An under-inflated tyre increases rolling resistance – and therefore fuel consumption – at precisely the time when the cold is already reducing range: our feature on Tesla range in winter explains this cumulative effect. It runs hotter, wears out at the edges and makes steering less precise. Also, forget the old myth that deflating tyres helps you drive better on snow: on the road, it impairs braking and stability, as securite-routiere.gouv.fr points out in its winter driving advice. Tesla’s winter tyre pressure should remain at the manufacturer’s recommended level.

Tesla tyre pressure in winter: the TPMS warning

When the warning light comes on, don’t ignore it: check all four tyres with a pressure gauge and top them up. If one tyre is losing pressure more than the others, check for a slow puncture. On a set of winter tyres, the sensors must be recognised by the car: pre-configured 433 MHz TPMS valves (€31.95) are fitted to many rims, and our Tesla TPMS sensor guide specifies compatibility by model year.

The winter tyre pressure checklist

  • Check every two weeks and before every journey to the mountains;
  • measure Tesla winter tyre pressure when the tyres are cold, using the value on the door label;
  • valve caps in place to protect against damp and frost;
  • check again after any sudden drop in temperature;
  • 12 V compressor in the boot for on-the-spot inflation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you deflate the tyres to drive on snow? No: on the road, an under-inflated tyre brakes less effectively and has poorer handling.

Is nitrogen useful? It reduces pressure fluctuations slightly, but regular air checks achieve the same result.

Should I usethe same pressure with snow tyres? Yes, stick to the pressure specified on the door label.

Why doesn’t the display show anything when the car starts? The sensors start transmitting after a few minutes’ driving; please wait before assuming there’s a fault.

The Green Drive view

Two minutes’ checking every two weeks is better than any gadget: it improves both safety and range. When it’s time to replace your tyres, Nokian tyres for the Model Y (€662.40) and the full range are available in our Model Y tyre section.
