Gartner’s 2023 Digital Automaker Index reveals which businesses are succeeding in the digital age and which are finding it difficult to change. With its untainted leadership, Tesla has demonstrated its skill as a technological pioneer.

The eight critical areas of the Digital Automaker Index, concentrated on software-centric domains, are used to assess automakers. The potential for online sales is among these categories: culture and leadership, talent, architecture, connected cars, autonomous driving, electrification, smart cockpit, and electrification. Stellantis came in at 14 out of 20 and is a barometer for well-known brands. The score underlines the need for these brands to convert into technology-focused businesses swiftly. Failure to do so could cause their slow decline, emphasizing the need to adjust to the changing environment quickly.

Tesla and Nio’s Cultural Edge

The index offers a fascinating perspective on the value of company culture. Due to the skill of their leadership teams in digital, Tesla and Nio received the highest ratings in the category of culture and leadership. Notably, both businesses received top grades for having CEOs who report directly to the chief information and digital officers. This structural alignment enables them to make strategic choices that improve software monetization.

The 2023 Digital Automaker Index emphasizes that tech-driven entrepreneurs are responsible for the automotive sector’s future. A new era in the sector is heralded by Tesla’s overwhelming lead and the emergence of new Chinese players.
