21-inch Tesla Model Y winter wheels with a staggered fitment

Which Tesla Model Y do they fit?

21-inch wheels fit every Model Y 2021–2024, the Model Y Long Range Juniper 2025+ and the Model Y Performance Juniper 2025+. For the Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive 2025+, it depends on the wheel: some list it, others exclude it; the product page has the final word.

The fitment is staggered: 255/35 R21 at the front, 275/35 R21 at the rear. Depending on the wheel, the rim width differs too, 9.5 × 21 J at the front and 10.5 × 21 J at the rear, or stays the same on all four, with the tyres still staggered. The wheels therefore cannot be rotated between axles: mark their position when fitting and storing them. Original wheel nuts are reused.

21-inch winter wheels and tyres: what to know before you choose

Looks. Some wheels echo the design and diameter of the Model Y Performance factory wheels; others go for gloss black.

Energy use. Around 5% more energy for each extra inch of wheel diameter: that is the order of magnitude GreenDrive sees, consistent with Tesla’s official ratings. A test of two identical Model Y Performance cars recorded 178 Wh/km on 21-inch wheels against 158 Wh/km on 19-inch, about 13% more energy on 21 inches (teslamag). Tyre, wheel, speed and temperature shift the gap.

Comfort and care. A 35-profile tyre has a short sidewall; it passes on more impact and protects the wheel less on broken roads. Check your pressures often, as they drop quickly in cold weather.

Type approval. Depending on the wheel: TÜV, sometimes with ECE and an NAD report, or JWL/VIA standards without a TÜV certificate. On snow, the winter tyres offered carry the 3PMSF marking; if you go for an all-season tyre, check for it.

GreenDrive estimate (around 5% per inch), never a promise.

What a 21-inch winter package includes

• 4 alloy wheels, 21 inches, with 255/35 R21 winter tyres at the front and 275/35 R21 at the rear, fitted and balanced;
• 4 Bluetooth TPMS sensors programmed for Tesla, optional on some product pages; without sensors for a Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive 2025+ built since September 2026;
• the tyre you pick on the product page, from several winter tyre brands depending on the wheel;
• your original wheel nuts reused, and a Swiss type-approval certificate as an option.

Winter tyres are a safety choice, not a legal requirement, in the UK and Ireland; abroad, 3PMSF tyres meet the winter rules of France, Germany, Austria and Italy, detailed on our Tesla Model Y winter wheels page. To buy wheels or tyres separately, see our alloy wheels for the Tesla Model Y and our tyres for the Tesla Model Y.

Snow chains for the Model Y on 21-inch wheels

Tesla recommends König-type chains, for example the K-Summit XXL K66 for the Model Y’s 21-inch wheels; the chains in our chains and winter equipment for the Tesla Model Y category work on the same principle. The Model Y Owner’s Manual keeps them to the rear axle, on winter tyres, never on summer tyres, at 48 km/h (30 mph) at most, wheel covers removed.

21-inch Tesla Model Y winter wheels: FAQ

Are 21-inch winter wheels a sensible choice on a Model Y?

Yes, on 3PMSF winter tyres, if you accept a short sidewall and higher energy use. If comfort and range come first, 19-inch winter wheels remain the alternative.

Why are the front and rear tyres different sizes?

A staggered fitment puts wider tyres at the rear. The wheels therefore stay on their own axle: no front-to-rear rotation.

Can my Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive 2025+ run on 21-inch wheels?

Yes, with a 21-inch wheel that lists it among its compatible versions; some exclude it, so check the product page.

Which package should I choose: with or without tyre pressure sensors?

With sensors for the Model Y 2021–2024, Long Range Juniper 2025+ and Performance Juniper 2025+. The Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive 2025+ is a separate case, if the wheel accepts it: built before September 2026, package with sensors; built since, it no longer has factory-fitted sensors: package without sensors.
