Portable Folding Solar Panels

What panel wattage should I choose?

The panel's power, in watts, determines how fast it charges. In full sun, a panel delivers 60 to 80% of its rated power in practice; in overcast weather, much less. To estimate the charging time, divide the power station's capacity (in Wh) by the power actually produced.

• Small panels (around 40 W): for a small power station or to charge smartphones and USB devices when hiking.
• Around 100 W: the right balance for 500 to 1,000 Wh power stations, and still easy to carry.
• 200 W and above, or several panels: for large power stations and stays of several days off-grid. Several panels can be linked together with a suitable connector.

Compatibility with your power station

Check two things on your power station's product page: the maximum solar input it accepts and the connector type. Jackery SolarSaga panels plug directly into compatible Jackery Explorer power stations; the list is given on each product page.

Getting the most from a portable folding solar panel

• Point it towards the sun and adjust the angle throughout the day: that is what makes the biggest difference.
• Avoid shade, even partial: a single shaded cell sharply reduces output.
• Behind a window or a windscreen, output drops: set the panel up outside.

Frequently asked questions about portable solar panels

Does a solar panel work in cloudy weather?

Yes, but its output drops significantly. Expect a partial recharge and choose a power station with enough capacity for days without sun.

Are folding panels rainproof?

They withstand splashing water according to their protection rating (given on each product page), but should not be left out in heavy rain. The power station itself must always be kept under cover.

Can I charge an electric car with a portable solar panel?

Not in any useful way: a portable panel produces a few hundred watt-hours per day, barely a few kilometres of range. It is used to recharge a power station, which then powers your devices.
