Why a portable battery in a Tesla?

• Real 230 V power: a Tesla only provides USB and a 12 V socket of around a hundred watts. A power station runs a kettle, a coffee machine, a laptop or a small fridge.
• The car's range preserved: you use the power station's energy, not the traction battery's.
• Usable outside the car: under the awning, at the beach, when bivouacking, or at home during a power cut.

Tesla Camp Mode: what you can plug in

Camp Mode keeps the climate control, the screen and the outlets running all night. Its consumption depends mainly on the outside temperature: low in mild weather, much higher in freezing conditions. What is really missing is 230 V appliances: that is the power station's role. To estimate runtime, divide the power station's capacity (in Wh) by the appliance's power, then subtract about 15% for losses.

Make sure the power station's output exceeds that of your most power-hungry appliance: a kettle or an induction hob requires a power station of at least 1,500 to 2,000 W.

Recharging the power station with the car

While you drive, the power station recharges from the 12 V socket in the console using the car charging cable: expect around a hundred watts, i.e. roughly ten hours for a 1,000 Wh power station. When the car is parked, the 12 V socket is only powered in Camp Mode. The fastest option remains charging from the mains at your stopover (often one to two hours) or in the sun with a folding panel. On electric cars equipped with V2L (Hyundai, Kia, MG and others), the power station recharges directly from the car's outlet.

What a portable battery does not do

What size for which boot?

A 500 to 1,000 Wh power station usually fits in the lower boot or the frunk of a Model 3 or Model Y: compare its dimensions, given on the product page, with the space available. Above 2,000 Wh, plan on using the main boot: these power stations weigh more than 20 kg, and some models have wheels and a telescopic handle. Dimensions and weight are given on each product page.

Frequently asked questions

Do European Teslas have V2L?

No. The V2L function arrived on the Model 3 and Model Y in the United States in October 2026, but it is not currently offered in Europe. A portable power station remains the only way to get 230 V power in a European Tesla.

Can I leave a power station in the car in summer or winter?

Avoid leaving it in direct sun behind a window or in freezing temperatures: the operating and charging temperature ranges are given on each product page. In a Tesla in Camp Mode, the cabin stays at a comfortable temperature.

Can a power station travel in a car during a journey?

Yes, strapped down or wedged in so it cannot move under braking. A suitable carry bag protects it from knocks.
