The Razor V2 19-inch is produced in Flow Forming. After casting, the rim flange is heated and then drawn by rollers: the metal becomes denser, allowing material to be removed while maintaining the same strength. The weight savings amount to up to 30% compared to a conventional cast wheel. It is manufactured in Germany using at least 70% recycled alloy.

The Razor 21 inches is forged, made of 6061-T6 aluminum: the material is compressed and then machined from solid, resulting in the highest mechanical strength for the lightest weight. It features a powder-coated finish suitable for winter use and always employs an offset configuration with wider rear rims than the front ones.

Why an aerodynamic rim is not a “turbine” rim

When designing an aerodynamic wheel, the goal is to move as little air as possible — A turbofan engine does exactly the opposite. Air drag is proportional to the square of the relative speed between the object and the air: doubling the speed quadruples the drag and the energy consumed. However, on a rotating wheel, the point in contact with the ground has zero airspeed, while the center of the wheel moves forward at the car’s speed: The top of the wheel therefore moves at twice the vehicle's speed. It is this area—along with the outer surface that is exposed to the airflow coming from the front of the vehicle—that determines the outcome. It must remain as smooth and sealed as possible.

The second source of energy loss is the resistance created by the rotation itself: spinning a fan requires more energy than spinning a disk. On the Razor, so the inside of the rim is flat and smooth, and the ventilation slots are shaped so as not to disrupt the airflow. The manufacturing technique also allows the left and right wheels to be oriented toward the car: No unwanted lateral force is generated, and the wake behind the vehicle remains symmetrical.

Then there’s weight, which is a key factor in both acceleration and braking—but you can’t judge a rim by its weight alone. Mass located far from the center of rotation is far more of a hindrance than mass located close to the hub, just like a figure skater who speeds up her spin by pulling her arms in without expending additional energy. With the same design, a forged rim weighs 25 to 30% less than a cast wheel.

These decisions were carefully considered. During the development of the Model S, , Tesla entrusted EXA with the numerical fluid dynamics simulation—a virtual wind tunnel. The New Aero had a 3D scan made of a Model S equipped with the original Turbine wheel, then supplied it to EXA as a reference. The result: the Razor reduces the drag of 9.9% of the vehicle's total weight and the lateral force of 94%, whereas the Turbine rim features superior asymmetric lift of 28% to that of the Razor. In practice, this results in a quieter ride, better stability, and improved performance.

Offset Wheel Setup and Directional Tires: What It Means

A single configuration consists of four identical rims : the 19-inch model from the Model S 2012–2021. The other three are in offset assembly, with the rear rims wider than the front ones—just like the original setup. You'll receive 2 front rims and 2 rear rims, which should not be swapped.

In any case, the rims are directional : The left and right wheels are mirror images of each other, which cancels out unwanted lateral forces and creates a symmetrical wake behind the car. Each set therefore contains 2 left rims and 2 right rims, each marked and bearing distinct approval numbers.
